SAC 120, ORL 115: Takeaways  (from Basketball Intelligence):

   – The Kids Were Alright: Buddy Hield, Willie Cauley-Stein and Skal Labissiere all impressed as starters as Coach Joerger rested  Afflalo, Lawson, Koufos and Evans (who is nursing an ankle injury).  It will be quite interesting to see to what extent  Joerger continues to give more playing time to the youngsters, who, after all, are expected to be key components as the Kings embark on building from the ground up.  Towering rookie Georgios Papagiannis also saw 11 minutes of action.

   – Veterans Darren Collison and Anthony Tolliver also played big roles: Collison provided leadership  with 13 assists to go along with 19 points and was +14. Tolliver scored 19 points, including a career-high 5 treys, several of which were delivered at key moments after Magic runs.

  – Another positive for the Kings was their ability to close out the game.  The tendency this season has been a startling inability to hold leads, regardless of size.  The Kings have generally been at their best when making up large deficits.

  – The Magic defended the paint well but closed out poorly at the three-point arc. The Kings thus were able to continue their success from distance, shooting 53.3 % as they hit 16 treys. As Elfrid Payton put it: ” Our emphais has been cutting off the paint, but I just think we did that too much and should have been closer to shooters.Credit them for making shots, but I would have liked to see us have stayed home (on shooters) a little more.”   The Magic also shot well from afar, hitting on 38.3% but that wasn’t good enough to offset their poor three-point defense.

  – The Kings continued their much-needed post-Cousins offensive balance as 7 players scored in double figures.

  – Elfrid Payton maintained his recent strong play with  60% shooting, 13 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds. Nikola Vucevic added 23 points on 10-for-17 shooting (including 3-for-3 from distance) and 9 rebounds.
