–  The Culture Of The Utah Jazz  (from  my_lo,  slcdunk.com):

”  The Jazz’s culture from an external point of view is one of internal improvement through incentives and accountability in order to win.  That might sound like every team’s goal but it’s not every team’s culture.  Culture requires buy in and alignment.  Goals just require a poster, a catchy phrase, and a cute picture of a kitten.

What culture also allows is an adaptable identity.  It allows an organization to change.

Take the San Antonio Spurs as an example.  They have been known as a defensive team who wants to slow the game down to a 67-70 finish one year then an offensive juggernaut the next.  They have been highly adaptable.  Their culture wasn’t necessarily defense.  It was their identity some years, but their culture was one of internal improvement through incentives and accountability in order to win.  So they changed their entire offensive structure to win when they didn’t have the parts necessary to comply with their defensive identity.  They changed.  Completely.  Teams without a good culture cannot do that on a dime.  Not enough has been written, said, or praised for their ability to adapt.”

Brad Stevens interview (from Judy Cohen, WEEI):

“I think the biggest thing I would say is most similar between coaching Butler and coaching the Celtics is I’ve coached a ton of prideful guys,” he said. “When I was at Butler, we had competitive, prideful, tough guys. And so any time you have pride then there’s always going to be some times where you’re hurting, or it’s a tougher day to coach, or it’s a tougher day to get going, whatever the case may be, but you always seem to come through that because you’re willing to work, you’re willing to get better.

“I just see across basketball, it doesn’t really matter what level. If guys want to be coached, if guys want to work, then it doesn’t matter if you’re talking about an 8-year-old or you’re talking about a 25-year-old. Those guys come to work, and they’re coachable because they want to get better.””
